U.K.'s Boris Johnson facing Tory party investigation over burqa comments

Yet we have representatives of our governing party who think otherwise and who use Muslim women in order to pander to far-right Islamophobes within the party, as Boris Johnson has done.

Boris Johnson is facing an investigation into whether he broke Conservative Party rules over his comments about Muslim women.

She further said that a woman is not answerable to anyone if they wish to wear a burqa.

The resignation solidified Johnson's position as a leader of the pro-Brexit wing of the Conservative Party, which is deeply divided over its attitude to the EU.

A party spokesperson said on that the code of conduct process is "strictly confidential".

'And some of the terms Boris used describing people's appearance obviously have offended.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph on Monday, Britain's one-time top diplomat said women wearing the burqa looked like "letter-boxes" or "bank robbers".

Sources close to Johnson said earlier this week that calls for him to apologise for the comments were "ridiculous".

Boris Johnson under fire for ‘hate’ burqa comments

Critics have accused him of stoking Islamophobia to boost his Tory leadership ambitions but his supporters have said he was speaking up for "liberal values".

"This inflammatory language will in fact motivate and fuel hate crimes, particularly towards visibly Muslim women who wear the veil or the hijab", Sajda Mughal, who runs the JAN Trust charity, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The repercussions could exasperate the party's growing civil war, where the debate over Johnson's comments has developed into a proxy war between Brexiteers and Remainers in the parliamentary party.

The BBC News interview, broadcast on a television in the waiting area, featured a Muslim woman in a niqab.

"The women who wear the niqab and report into us clearly report to us they are called telephone boxes, letter boxes, bin bags, when they are abused and when they are assaulted".

MEND, a Muslim advocacy organisation, said his comments would "increase hostility towards a group already looked upon with mistrust and suspicion" while Imran Shah, a spokesperson for MPACUK, a Muslim campaign group, said the remarks were "a reminder of how similar Boris Johnson's views about Muslims are to those of Donald Trump and Steve Bannon".

She also wrote: If a woman wants to wear a short dress, it is her right and freedom to do so.
