California Wildfire Now Largest In State History

Its intensity was so great at one point, that it generated a tornado-like fire storm - as well as its own weather system.

The fire - which comprises two blazes in the state's north - was declared the biggest in California's history on Monday.

That surpasses a wildfire past year in Southern California that burned 440 square miles (1,140 square kilometers). But they also blame cities and towns that are expanding housing into previously undeveloped areas.

A California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman declined to comment on Trump's tweet.

In all, more than 14,000 firefighters are battling major blazes throughout California.

But the other one is growing after spreading into the Mendocino National Forest.

What's more, over the same period, the state has experienced eight of its 10 most destructive fires in history.

"If fire ignition occurs, conditions are favorable for very rapid fire spread", the National Weather Service warned in a statement, saying "extreme fire behavior" could "threaten life and property".

The National Wildfire Coordinating Group, which includes both the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service, defines a complex fire as "two or more individual incidents located in the same general area which are assigned to a single incident commander or unified command". By nightfall, the fire had burned 4,000 acres (6 square miles or 16 square kilometers) of chaparral-covered hillsides and destroyed one building.

Crews will continue to work on tying in remaining containment lines on the River Fire, Cal Fire reported.

Where is the Mendocino Complex Fire?

As fires grow to historic sizes in California, President Trump tweeted that the state is "foolishly" diverting "vast amounts of water from the North" into the Pacific Ocean instead of using them to fight its wildfires.

The latest update from Cal Fire notes that total containment actually decreased to 30 percent, down from 33 percent the previous day.

The River Fire is smaller, scorching 48,920 acres so far, and burning to the west of Clear Lake.

California's firefighting resources are stretched thin dealing with some 20 fires burning throughout the state, which means the Arizona crews play a crucial role. Mandatory evacuations are still in place for areas in Lake, Colusa, and Mendocino County.
