State lawmakers unanimously passed the law previous year to designate each August 4 as a commemorative holiday to celebrate the 44th president, whose political career began in IL. The bill was signed into law on August 6, 2017, making this year the first time it's actually celebrated.

He served in the IL state Senate from 1997 to 2005 before joining the U.S. Senate.

IL government offices remained open Saturday as the home state of former President Barack Obama commemorated his birthday under a new state law.

Democrats wanted Obama's birthday to be recognized as a full legal holiday that gives state workers and others a paid day off, but Republicans were not having it, according to the report.
