Norwegian to hire 40 more pilots in Ireland for transatlantic flights

The stoppage will be the fifth by Irish based Ryanair pilots in recent weeks as a weave of strikes across Europe cause widespread travel disruption for passengers.

Kenny Jacobs, chief marketing officer at Ryanair, commented: "Regrettably, nearly 200,000 Ryanair customers had their flights cancelled in July because of repeated ATC staff shortages in the UK, Germany and France, adverse weather, and unnecessary pilot and cabin crew strikes".

Ryanair, which operates from 86 bases in 37 countries and carried 130 million passengers last year, chose to recognise unions for the first time in its 32-year history last December to avert widespread strikes before Christmas.

Fórsa has reiterated that it remains available for talks, and is prepared to explore the option of third-party facilitation - which to date has been ruled out by management.

Ryanair pilots in Sweden, Belgium and Ireland are set to strike, so far causing the cancellation of another 20 flights to and from Ireland.

Around a quarter of Ryanair's 350 pilots bases in its home country of Ireland went on strike for the first time in a push for better conditions.

The notice came just one day after Ryanair offered a meeting with Forsa on next Tuesday morning under the conditions that no more strikes will be called by the union before the proposed meeting.

The first strike took place on 12 July, followed by 24 hours strikes on 18 July, 24 July and today (3 Aug).

In a statement, the SEPLA pilots' union said it filed the lawsuit at Spain's top-level National Court after a year of negotiations with Ryanair to employ its members under Spanish rather than Irish legislation failed to bear fruit.

Cabin crew in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Belgium staged a two-day strike that forced Ryanair to cancel the flights of more than 50,000 customers, the airline's biggest-ever strike.

Ryanair refused to say anything on the lawsuit, saying it did not "comment on rumor or speculation".

In a statement this afternoon, the Irish pilots' union Fórsa blamed Ryanair for escalating this summer's ongoing dispute by warning of potential job cuts last Wednesday.
