Farmers still uncertain, despite Trump-EU trade deal

The tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, particularly on China, have resulted in retaliatory tariffs impacting US exports, including soybeans.

US President Donald Trump (R) meets with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC on July 25, 2018.

"We agreed today.to work together toward zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies on non-auto industrial goods", declared the two leaders in a joint statement. "We need more details with these things because it's so much in flux and they change from day to day". The plant was closed in 2015 - but the process of it reopening started well before Trump announced his steel tariffs.

Financial analysis firm Height said of the agreement struck with Juncker: "We expect that both sides felt enormous pressure to reach some deal to stave off significant political backlash, and this tentative agreement to pause the ongoing trade war reflects that motivation".

But Rep. Duffy said the tariffs are meant to protect American farmers from people who don't have fair trade deals for the U.S.

President Donald Trump declared victory for American farmers Thursday (26 July) after brokering a ceasefire in a trade dispute with the European Union, but it is unclear how soon it will bring relief to those hurt by tit-for-tat tariffs. Barriers would be reduced and trade is services, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products will increase. Trump's attempts to ignite a trade war with China and the loss of mutual trust suggest the existing Sino-US interactive mode is no longer working. But the taxes also exact a toll on USA businesses and consumers, which pay more for imported products.

Trump has threatened to place penalty taxes on up to $500 billion in products imported from China, a move that would dramatically ratchet up the stakes in the trade dispute involving the globe's two largest economies. The EU applies zero tariffs on U.S. LNG imports, so cutting them is not an option to boost trade in any future U.S. -EU talks.

The aid program was announced by President Donald Trump to counter the plunge in commodity prices after China retaliated against US tariffs imposed in an effort to settle trade disputes.

Luiz set to stay at Chelsea
Asked about Jorginho's impact, Luiz added: "He's a fantastic player, I'm so happy to play with him". "I love Sarri's philosophy". But with a change of management, it seems Luiz has had a change of heart and wants to fight for his place in a Chelsea shirt.

President Donald Trump's plan for "vast amounts" of USA liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be sold to the European Union after trade talks with its top representative faces a reality test.

Germany's conservative economy minister, Peter Altmaier said the "breakthrough" could avoid a trade war and "save millions of jobs".

Seeking to strengthen trade ties outside the West, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday took his first trip overseas since starting his second five-year term in office after Beijing abolished presidential term limits, allowing him to rule infinitely. Rufus Yerxa, president of the National Foreign Trade Council and formerly deputy director general of the World Trade Organization, said Trump appears to think that America's trading partners will yield to pressure without securing any concessions in return.

But it is essential that China remains calm in the face of United States threats and its attempts to contain China's rise, while adhering to its independent and win-win development path, because that is the best way to deal with the loose cannon that the Trump administration has become.

With China promising an imminent battery of counter sanctions on U.S. exports, the rest of the world nervously awaits further developments.

The trade agreement still lacks details, but it marks a surprising reversal. If Asian countries devalue, servicing those United States dollar debts will suddenly become a great deal more hard, and a rash of defaults will be possible.

Last week, Trump tweeted, "Tariffs are the greatest!" China has struck back with duties on soybeans and pork, affecting Midwest farmers in a region of the country that supported the president in his 2016 campaign.

"If this trade war continued or these actions continued, there would always be some exposure or risk to our business", he said. From what I've been hearing, USA soybeans are running about -$1 per bushel cheaper into the European Union than soybeans coming out of Brazil. "Reason has prevailed", BusinessEurope President Pierre Gattaz said.
