Pacquiao stops Matthysse to win back world title

Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao clinched his 60th victory Sunday with a seventh-round knockout of Argentinian Lucas Matthysse, his first stoppage in nine years, that will help revive his career.

"With Senator Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao's victory against Lucas Matthysse for the WBA welterweight belt, the Palace is one with the Filipino people in celebrating this tremendous feat", Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.

Pacquiao dropped his opponent with a stinging left uppercut through the guard in the third, forced Matthysse to take a knee from rights to the head in the fifth and then finished him off in the seventh. It was a long time ago since I've done that, I came out smoking hot. "I lost to a great fighter and a great legend".

"I said he (Pacquiao) is 39", President Duterte said, relaying his conversation with Pacquiao in an ambush interview after the fight in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Sunday.

The Filipino dropped the champion three times in the fight, the first coming from a beautifully timed left hook in round three as the veteran dominated.

"It's most hard to be fighting Manny Pacquiao", he said.
