Tropical Storm Chris could affect East Coast

Tropical Storm Chris, which is spinning a couple of hundreds of miles off the North Carolina coast, is expected to turn into a hurricane Tuesday, but forecasters say it shouldn't affect the lives of Robeson County residents - unless they have a beach trip coming soon.

While it will no longer be a tropical storm, the remnants may still bring heavy rain, strong winds, and rough surf along parts of the coast.

But Beryl, which had been the Atlantic seasons first hurricane, disintegrated as a tropical storm shortly before reaching Dominica.

Gov. Ricardo Rossello said the government has opened 42 shelters for citizens to obtain relief from Beryl at the demand of mayors across the island.

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit had warned people to respect an island-wide curfew and remain indoors.

The DDM said a high wind advisory is in effect.

Beryl is has been downgraded and is now considered remnants of a tropical storm.

As of Sunday, Beryl was producing maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour with higher gusts. The Hurricane Center declared Beryl as simply a remnant disturbance on Sunday since it weakened below tropical-depression strength.

Chris is expected to begin moving late Tuesday to the northeast and pick up speed Wednesday and Thursday, the center said.

TS Beryl crossed over Dominica late Sunday into early Monday with no reports of any damage.

All eyes are on the Atlantic as Hurricane Chris has strengthened to a Category 2 storm, and while it is expected to remain well off-shore, rough surf and unsafe rip currents will impact the Jersey Shore and Long Island later this week.

Many North Carolina beaches are closed to swimming due to heavy surf and risky rip currents caused by Tropical Storm Chris. The movement of the storm is expected to have some impact on both land and marine areas of Atlantic Canada later this week.

Chris is the only named storm in the Atlantic as of Monday morning.

Chris remains mostly stationary well east of the SC coast, centered roughly 200 miles to the south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
