Trump to Appoint Extreme Ideologue to the Supreme Court

"I look forward to meeting with Judge Kavanaugh and to the Senate's fair consideration of his nomination, beginning with the work of Chairman Grassley and the Judiciary Committee". The White House extended invitations to Democratic Sens.

He has served since 2006 on the influential US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and was formerly a White House aide under George W Bush.

On Monday evening, Kavanaugh said he was "humbled" to have been selected by Trump.

Most Republicans are expected to support Kavanaugh, while most Democrats will nearly certainly vote against him. Now, he is President Donald Trump's nominee to become a Supreme Court justice.

Leonard Leo, who is on leave from the Federalist Society and has been advising Trump over the court nomination, said he assumes Kavanaugh, Barrett, Hardiman and Kethledge "are the four" who are getting the most focus.

Barrett has been somewhat dismissive of the notion of following Supreme Court precedents, the doctrine known as stare decisis.

Opposition researchers, vetters and Senate staffers would have to comb through not just his 286 opinions as a judge, the most of any current judge under consideration, but also his papers at the National Archives, which would include his years in the Bush White House and his role in the Ken Starr investigation looking into President Clinton. A more conservative majority could be more willing to uphold state restrictions on abortion, if not overturn the 45-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman's constitutional right. In fact, the only member of "the Supremes" who isn't Catholic or Jewish is Justice Neil Gorsuch, who is Episcopalian.

"She's really outstanding", Hatch said.

Democrats who plan to oppose Trump's nominee are focusing on two Republican moderates, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, hoping to turn them against Trump's selection.

Hardiman holds a consistently conservative voting record.

The US Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter on contentious laws and disputes between states and the federal government. His father, also a lawyer, was mentioned merely for inspiring the nominee's love of sports, which Kavanaugh says he has passed on to his young daughters, whose basketball teams he coaches.

He also worked for Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel who investigated then president Bill Clinton but in 2009 he was reported as saying that presidents should be free from civil lawsuits, criminal prosecutions and investigations while in office.

In his dozen years on the court, Kavanaugh has been involved in some 286 opinions.

Mr Kavanaugh was recently challenged in a case involving a pregnant teenage immigrant in federal custody.

Kavanaugh's work on the Starr report has been scrutinized by Republicans who have said it could pose trouble for the president as he negotiates with special counsel Robert Mueller over the terms of a possible interview related to Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

That kind of thinking could prove helpful to Trump, who has been dogged by accusations of sexual harassment, as well as possible obstruction of justice in the Russian Federation probe now being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The confirmation process is expected to dominate Washington ahead of November's mid-term elections, with the Republicans holding a narrow 51-49 majority in the Senate. And that is a big if.

Murkowski and Collins are sure to face increasing pressure over the next several months from their Democratic colleagues to buck the president's nominee over the fate of women's abortion and reproductive rights. All three voted to confirm Gorsuch and are up for re-election in states that Trump won handily.

"I'm open to voting yes. We don't know who the nominee is going to be yet", Sen. "Following the president's announcement, I will carefully review and consider the record and qualifications of Judge Brett Kavanaugh".
