Trump Unveils Court Pick on Monday

Trump will announce his pick Monday night.

According to anonymously sourced media reports in outlets such as the Associated Press, Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, the three people President Donald Trump is now considering to be his potential nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy are Amy Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge.

The Senate is tasked with vetting and ultimately confirming or rejecting whomever Trump chooses to fill the vacancy on America's highest court. On Monday, Trump expressed strongly favorable opinions about him, triggering talk that he's not a candidate to be ignored. The "person that is chosen will be outstanding".

"If Democrats tried to go anti-Catholic with her, that'd backfire and we know it", said Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.). And Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, have set themselves up as key swing votes.

The eventual nominee will only need 50 votes to be confirmed, thanks to rules adopted by Senate leadership in 2017. "Kavanaugh and Kethledge have the 'inside track, ' according to a person close to the president, because some White House officials believe Coney Barrett, 46, could instead be a pick for the high court in the coming years, after she gains more experience on the federal bench".

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders also refused to name them, but did say each of the four spent about 45 minutes with the President. Other contenders that have received serious interest include federal appeals judges Amul Thapar, Thomas Hardiman and Joan Larsen. He is a graduate of the University of MI, where he received both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate degrees.

Trump's Supreme Court Nomination to Preempt TV Programming
Thapar, 49, a Cincinnati-based federal appeals court judge, was among the first four candidates interviewed by Trump on July 2. And analysts say Trump's latest pick for the court could provide the fifth vote needed to rescind Roe v.

Amy Coney Barrett, 46, is a former law clerk to Scalia and was appointed to serve on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals by Trump a year ago. Kethledge upheld rapist and murderer Marvin Gabrion's death penalty which Gabrion's lawyers sought to overturn in part based on Michigan's lack of a death penalty.

Kethledge, 51, is a Wayne State University law school grad who was originally appointed by George W. Bush.

They argue that the elected president is empowered by the Constitution to nominate Supreme Court justices - and that he should be granted some latitude to do so.

As Trump's list tightened, there was some internal concern that the president's options could be narrowed by the public outcry - particularly what had appeared to be mounting conservative reservations about Kavanaugh. In her 20s she co-authored a paper that said Catholic judges, if they are faithful to church teachings, are "morally precluded" from enforcing the death penalty. While no one knows for sure how each of the president's candidates will vote on certain issues, Carolyn Shapiro, a Supreme Court expert with Kent College of Law, said overturning Roe v. Wade may be a safe bet based on how Trump came up with his list of nominees.

Once the selection is announced, of course, the race will be on to get the nominee confirmed as soon as possible. Like Donnelly, she also met with Trump after Kennedy's retirement, where they discussed the court vacancy, which was right after Trump railed against her during a rally in North Dakota with her challenger, Rep. Kevin Cramer. The Kennedy nomination likely means that his replacement's confirmation process will take priority over other pending matters, so it's likely we'll see confirmation hearings begin sometime after that.
