Rain Resumes, Thai Cave Rescue Effort Begins

Thai Navy SEALs are working on the rescue mission, according to The Washington Post.

Gunan, thought to be 38, had left the navy, but had come back to help in the rescue operation, in which 1,000 people are now involved.

The rescuers of this unprecedented effort are trying to establish new ways to extract the boys from above, if the underground chambers flood and it is considered too risky to evacuate the team by diving out through the submerged passageways.

"The boys are ready to face any challenges", rescue chief Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters near the cave site as the threat loomed of monsoon rains causing more flooding in the cave and blocking off a rescue bid.

Chiang Rai province Governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn has said it is too unsafe for the Thai soccer team to be extracted from the cave for now, while also confirming fresh oxygen will be pumped in.

Medical teams have been rehearsing for three days and are ready to treat the group when they emerge, officials said. It is only a small battle we've won, but the war has not ended.

The regional governor said late Friday that there is a window of three or four days that is the optimum time to get the boys out. Thai authorities are racing to pump out water from the flooded cave before more rain is forecast to hit the northern region.

The oxygen level in the cavern, which has been measured as low as 15 percent, remains a major concern, he said.

The rescue team, made up of a mixture of both foreign and Thai expert divers, have apparently now reached the boys and are preparing the first for the journey out.

"Some are as deep as 400 metres. but they still can not find their location yet", Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters, adding the mission lacked the technology "to pinpoint where they are staying".
