At least 54 die in Quebec amid extreme heat

Public health officials said on Friday that coroner investigations will be completed to confirm that the reported fatalities are all heat related.

Dr David Kaiser, the senior physician at Montreal's public health agency, said that most of those who had died from the heat in Montreal were 65 or older, had histories of health problems or mental illness and had been living without air-conditioning.

Environment Canada expected temperatures to cool on Friday with much less extreme highs of 23C to 25C over the weekend.

"The level of danger remains high, despite a decrease in humidity level",- said the representative of service of emergency Canada Stefan Oberhoff. "So now we're adding another blow to that, and the blow is recurrent over multiple days".

Montreal health officials also opened 19 cooling stations in public health and social services buildings across the city and asked people to call public transport services to get a ride to one of the air-conditioned centers.

A furious finale to match the frantic first lap looked certain when Ericsson then crashed at Turn One. His team-mate Bottas, on older tyres, led the closing laps, but was unable to resist the challengers.

The heat-related death toll continues to rise across Quebec as Environment Canada issues a smog and heat warning for today.

According to the Ministry, numerous dead were over 65 years of age and had physical or mental health problems. "Obviously when we get there and the person may have passed, they're very rarely already with family". He encouraged them to check on their neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable and often isolated.

None of the victims had air conditioning and many died inside of their homes, says Kaiser.

In 2010, a heat wave killed around 100 people in the Montreal area.
