Apple and Samsung settle seven-year patent battle

Apple and Samsung settle seven-year patent battle

Apple and Samsung have ended a years-long patent battle over copied iPhone design with an undisclosed settlement, according to a USA court filing Wednesday.

The two hi-tech behemoths went to court over the designs that have now become commonplace on most popular smartphones, with a court ruling in 2012 in favor of Apple.

Indeed in parallel with the court case - and the evolving iPhone - Apple has also been working to extricate itself from its dependence on Samsung's components.

"They have agreed to drop [the lawsuits] and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter", District Court Judge Lucy Koh announced today. Some of the specific features Apple feels Samsung stole include home screen app grids, tap to zoom, and "bounceback" scrolling.

The document doesn't specify the terms of the settlement, so it's unclear if Samsung agreed to pay the $539 million it was supposed to, or if a different agreement was reached. "This case has always been about more than money".

Hernandez dreaming of 'the impossible' at World Cup
Sweden substitute Pontus Jansson said he had lost his temper with the Germans but accepted they had ultimately regretted their actions.

In 2012, a U.S. jury awarded California-based Apple $1.05bn in damages for the copied features, which included design elements like the screen that displays icons in a grid. Apple ignited the smartphone revolution with iPhone and it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design. "We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers", Apple wrote.

Samsung appealed part of that award, taking its case all the way to the Supreme Court, arguing that damages should be limited since patent infringement involved only certain features. But, as evidenced by the number of cases that Apple has brought against Android manufacturers in recent years, Apple is not afraid to sue in order to defend its intellectual property.

In 2016, in a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court agreed, handing a victory to Samsung.

With the settlement of remaining claims and counterclaims in the Apple v. Samsung fight, Apple ends a long battle that its late co-founder Steve Jobs once fervently waged.
