Supreme Court Rules In Internet Sales Tax Case

President Trump called the decision a "big victory for fairness" in a tweet posted Thursday afternoon. E-tailers still won't have to pay for the expenses associated with brick-and-mortar stores, but new sales taxes will help even the playing field between online and physical retail.

Prior to Wayfair v South Dakota, businesses that didn't have a physical location in a state were not required to remit sales taxes to that state government for their sales.

The Supreme Court agreed to overturn those decisions in a 5-4 ruling. However, nothing will actually change until states (or the federal government) enact new regulations to force the collection of sales tax. Among other technical and practical reasons cited by the majority for its decision was the argument that no-sales-tax rules hurt state revenues supporting schools and services. It also impacts Amazon, but only for the goods it sells from third-party merchants. With the courts ruling, internet companies can now be required to collect states sales tax in states where they don't have a physical presence. Some people say shopping at a store has its advantages over online. "We think that incentive, that carrot if you will, is strong enough to clean up our state and local sales tax codes", McCarthy said.

But when and if that happens depends on the state: Some may pass laws quickly, others can take years and some states, like the ones that don't have a sales tax, may choose not to require it, says Mr. Bishop-Henchman.

Some could be lifted as negotiations progress. "And they blew up sites where they test and do the testing", the president said. Pompeo told the same Cabinet meeting Kim had made a personal commitment, and added: "He has got his reputation on the line".

Trump's tweet about Germany referred to a political dispute over immigration that is threatening German Chancellor Angela Merkel's governing coalition.

It's clear that the court's decision will mean extra cash for states. "That legislation, which the Indiana Chamber strongly supported, has our state perfectly poised to fully implement an online sales tax law and trigger the tax collection".

The original 1992 ruling from Quill v.

"We are a state, we're most famous for having one of the most complicated and quite frankly, screwed up sales tax systems in the United States", McCarthy said.

Online shopping nationwide and in SC has surged - thanks to the internet's availability - as more shoppers buy goods online instead of driving to stores. "It automatically made the playing field unlevel for those entities that are here in the state doing business and participating in our community".
