Cabinet divisions not making Brexit harder, insists May, denying Remainer betrayal claims

Tory rebels want Parliament to be able to direct the government's course at such a potentially "apocalyptic moment".

Facing claims of betrayal by some pro-EU colleagues, Mrs May insisted that she and her Cabinet colleagues recognised the concerns some people had about the role of Parliament in the Brexit process but she made clear she would not budge on the primacy of Government in the talks with Brussels, saying: "Parliament can not tie the hands of Government in negotiations".

He told BBC One's Sunday Politics: 'We could collapse the government'.

She admitted there had been "a debate" about what a "meaningful" vote for Parliament meant: "I've listened carefully to the concerns, I've put an amendment down which I think balances this issue of the role of Parliament together with the need for us to ensure we don't overturn the decision of the British people".

Mr Grieve previously tabled his own proposals, which would have allowed Parliament to dictate the next steps the Government should take if no deal was reached by the end of February.

"I appeal to colleagues across the debate - Leave, Remain and those in the middle - to support Dominic Grieve's amendment to allow us as Members of Parliament to do our job and make sure the Government does not sell us a pup".

He added: "That I am not prepared to do".

Grieve said. "I'd urge (Brexit minister) David Davis".

TORY rebels could cause the government to collapse in a future vote on a "catastrophic" Brexit, ex-attorney general Dominic Grieve has said.

The opposition Liberal Democrats confirmed they would support an amendment in the Lords this week to ensure parliament is given a "meaningful vote".

But an amendment tabled by Brexit Secretary David Davis this evening gives MPs no chance to block a "no deal" European Union withdrawal if agreement has not been reached with Brussels by January 21 next year.

Lee said he had had "conversations with ministers at all levels who are concerned about the direction of travel".

"The first thing I want to understand is why this has been rejected?"

Mr Buckland stressed that while Tory rebels argued the vote they wanted would only be advisory, he stressed that even this vote could have a political outcome and send a signal to Brussels that the UK Government was not in control of its own negotiating strategy.
