Yussuf Poulsen goal powers Denmark to 1-0 win over Peru

The Danish have been World Cup regulars since 1986 and have players like Kasper Schmeichel, Christian Eriksen and Andreas Bjelland to boast of.

Both teams are riding some momentum, but Peru more so.

The teams were level after an interesting first half in which Peru missed a penalty.

The South Americans continued to attack in the second half and almost opened the scoring in the 57th minute but Andre Carrillo and Edison Flores missed chances in a goalmouth scramble.

Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen had an otherwise quiet outing but provided the decisive moment when he threaded an immaculate pass through the defence for Poulsen to beat advancing Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese in the 59th minute.

His 29th cap for Denmark, the opener was just Poulsen's fifth and brought the first time he had scored in consecutive games for his country, after netting 2-0 friendly win over Mexico.

Paolo Guerrero came on from the bench following a successful appeal to suspend his 14-month drug ban cleared him to feature, but he could not turn the game in Peru's favour.

The referee pointed to the spot upon reviewing video footage and Cueva blazed over, much to the dismay of Peru's sizable travelling support.

DAY: Canada takes another trade hit; ECB keeps interest rate the same
Markets had been anticipating a 10-basis-point hike in the ECB's benchmark deposit rate - now at -0.4 percent - by June 2019. One issue keeping investors in check was concern about U.S. threats to impose tariffs on $50 billion of Chinese goods.

Pennsylvania tornadoes: Officials confirm tornadoes touched down in Franklin, Wilkes-Barre townships

In the 43rd minute, Edison Flores went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Yussuf Poulsen though referee Bakary Gassama did not deem it a foul initially.

The Argentine coach backed Cueva to bounce back from his disappointing evening and said he was impressed by the way the Sao Paulo midfielder performed in the second half.

"After the penalty he was asking for the ball, participating in play - that's the only way".

And Denmark also had to upset the odds to make it to Russian Federation, scrapping their way to a playoff victory over Ireland.

Peru piled forward and Flores drew a fine, one-handed save from Schmeichel, before the winger was replaced by Peru's all-time leading goal-scorer Guerrero in the 62nd minute.

In the Denmark vs Peru game, Peru is making a comeback exactly 36 years after their last world cup appearance.

It was a sublime save that secured all three points for Denmark from a game many observers feel they probably deserved to lose.

While their team may have ultimately lost the match, the Peru fans looked and sounded happy to just be in the tournament and the way their side played will still have them confident of a positive tournament.
