Two Kansas deputies fatally shot while transporting an inmate

Wyandotte County sheriff's Maj. Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, died Friday. The deputies were taken to the University of Kansas Hospital, where both died of their wounds.

'It is very possible that with their own firearm, they were both shot, ' Wyandotte County sheriff's Maj.

Zeigler said authorities were withholding the inmate's name until he had been formally charged, which is expected to happen next week.

A candlelight vigil will be held Sunday night in Kansas to memorialize the two sheriff's deputies who were shot and killed when an inmate overpowered them outside a courthouse.

He says no other suspects are being sought in the shooting. Kansas City Police Capt. Robert Melton, 46, was gunned down while chasing suspects of a drive-by shooting on July 19, 2016.

Local news outlets are reporting that the shooting occurred about 11:30 a.m. Friday.
