Saudi-led forces battle Shiite rebels south of key Yemen port

The UN envoy for Yemen Wednesday pressed on with negotiations to keep a key Red Sea port open to vital aid deliveries after government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition launched an offensive on Hodeida.

The biggest offensive of the years-long war in the Arab world's poorest nation has raised warnings from aid agencies that Yemen's humanitarian disaster could deepen.

Saudi-led coalition warplanes and Apache helicopters provided "continuous" air support to pro-government forces, striking Huthi positions, military sources said.

State media in both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates did not immediately acknowledge the assault.

On Thursday, a senior UAE official said the Trump administration has rejected requests for military assistance in the coalition attack on Hodeida.

The new United Nations envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, tweeted that he was "extremely concerned" by the violence, calling on all parties to exercise restraint.

Early on Wednesday, convoys of vehicles headed towards the rebel-held city as heavy gunfire rang out.

Saudi-owned satellite news channels have announced the start of the Saudi-led coalition's assault on Hodeida.

Worldwide aid agencies and the United Nations have warned the assault could shut down the vital aid route for some 70 percent of Yemen's food, as well as the bulk of humanitarian aid and fuel supplies.

Rahane insists India won’t take Test debutants Afghanistan lightly
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he hoped the match could bring the South Asian neighbours closer together. Only last month, an attack on a cricket match in Khan´s home city of Jalalabad killed eight people and wounded 45.

The two countries also vowed to distribute urgently-needed food supplies and to supply hospitals in Hodeida with medical equipment and staff. Officials from Saudi Arabia and the UAE also said the countries would work to ensure electricity continues to flow to Yemeni homes, hospitals and the port in Hodeida.

Forces loyal to Yemen's exiled government and irregular fighters led by Emirati troops had neared Hodeida in recent days.

The offensive is controversial as Hodeida serves as the key entry point for supplies into a country teetering on the brink of starvation. The port is some 150 kilometres (90 miles) southwest of Sanaa, Yemen's capital, which has been in Houthi hands since September 2014.

The war pits the Houthis against the Western-backed Sunni Muslim states, which intervened in 2015 to restore the exiled government and thwart what Riyadh and Abu Dhabi see as expansionist aims Iran.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, the current council president, told reporters Wednesday that the United Kingdom asked for the meeting.

"We are not giving up", a Security Council diplomat said.

The attack is expected to lead to a protracted and bloody confrontation, putting "literally hundreds of thousands of people... into a life-threatening situation", Lise Grande, United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, told USA radio station NPR.

The United Nations and other aid groups already had pulled their global staff from Hodeida ahead of the assault. Military sources said the deaths were caused by mines and snipers.
