Paul Manafort will not pass "go"

Paul Manafort will not pass

A federal judge revoked Paul Manafort's bail Friday and ordered him to remain locked up until his trial later this year, punishing him for allegations that he tried to tamper with witnesses. Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled that Manafort has violated his pre-trial release and has detained him pending trial, CBS News' Clare Hymes reports.

Trump tweeted a response to Manafort's jailing, defending his former campaign manager.

Prosecutors say the two men tried to get two witnesses to say that lobbying work on behalf of Ukraine and carried out by clandestinely paid former politicians occurred only in Europe and not the USA, a contention the witnesses said they knew was false.

It was not immediately clear when Mr Manafort would be imprisoned or where.

Now he is going to jail, giving special counsel Robert Mueller the maximum possible leverage to flip the longtime political operator against the United States president.

Judge Jackson said there wasn't another option than to revoke bail.

"This is not middle school", Jackson said to the lawyers.

"I have no appetite for this", she said.

Mueller insists Manafort's case falls within his jurisdiction because of his connection with both the Trump campaign and to officials in Russian Federation and Ukraine.

Mueller, whose investigation has overshadowed Trump's presidency, is investigating whether the president's 2016 campaign colluded with Moscow and whether Trump has unlawfully sought to obstruct the Russian Federation probe.

He pleaded not guilty on the charges imposed on him and had been on home confinement in Virginia. When Manafort was first arraigned and pleaded not guilty back in October, bail was set at $10 million and his passports were confiscated.

Prosecutors had previously complained to the judge about Manafort's behavior as he awaited trial. "Didn't know Manafort was the head of the Mob", Trump wrote.

A federal grand jury indicted Mr Manafort and longtime associate Konstantin Kilimnik last week on charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice, adding to the multiple felony counts he already faced. "I'm concerned you seem to treat these proceedings as another marketing exercise".

There's also no guarantee that pardoning Manafort would prevent prosecutors from learning what information he knows.

In a superseding indictment, the prosecutors claimed that Mr. Manafort and a close associate, Konstantin V. Kilimnik, had contacted the two witnesses this year, hoping to persuade them to testify that Mr. Manafort had never lobbied in the United States for Viktor F. Yanukovych, the pro-Moscow president of Ukraine who fled to Russian Federation in 2014 after a popular uprising. A lawyer for the witness told prosecutors that Manafort said, "This is Paul, Paul Manafort". He has pleaded not guilty to almost two dozen charges related to tax and bank fraud, money laundering, making false statements, and failure to register as a foreign agent. Kilimnik, whom Mueller's office says has ties to Russian intelligence, could not be reached for comment.
