Ian Poulter uses positive mindset to make bright start at US Open

McIlroy found trouble just about everywhere and shot 80, his highest first-round score in a major.

With the fairways and greens lined a half-dozen deep in spots for the marquee threesome of Johnson, Woods and Justin Thomas, there never was a shortage of encouraging shouts of "Tiger!"

And McIlroy, who started on the 10th tee, was only just managing to play bogey golf, shooting a seven-over-par 42 on his first nine holes before dropping three more shots at the first and second. "It was just hard all day".

Johnson holed medium-length putts for birdies, a few nervy, short putts for par and picked up a bonus when his shot from a front bunker on the par-4 eighth rattled and rolled into the cup.

Out in four-over 39, he sandwiched a tap-in birdie at the fourth between bogeys at the third and fifth before closing with four pars to finish the day just inside the top 60 alongside the likes of Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood on five-over.

Now in his 10th tournament of 2018, Woods has lamented his inability to put all parts of his game together, a continuing theme Thursday.

Burmester, who is playing in his first Major event, birdied the 16th but then gave it back with a bogey at 17th and then on the final stretch. So to get through those two very tricky par-threes in four shots is well ahead of the game. Woods settled for an 8-over-par 78 with only one birdie.

Spain's Valencia to welcome migrants in days
The UN refugee agency and the European Union had both called for a swift end to the stand-off between the two countries.

Windy conditions quickly helped send scores soaring on the first day of the 118th US Open at Shinnecock Hills, with former champion Rory McIlroy one of the high-profile victims.

Poulter admitted he struggled to enjoy his first US Open appearance at Shinnecock Hills in 2004, and that he has not enjoyed many since, but he arrived with a far more positive attitude this week. His recent putting issues became even worse.

Much like two weeks ago at the Memorial Tournament, Woods hit plenty of good shots but was unable to get any putts to drop.

"It's a different kind of enjoyment, right?"

After Woods set the putter down behind his ball on the 10th green, he backed away when the ball moved.

"Shoot something in the 60s tomorrow, and I'll be just fine".
