Trump says summit with Kim Jong Un is back on

It was after 18 years that a North Korean official met a United States president in the Oval Office. On Thursday, Kim met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who also attended the meeting at the White House.

A day later, however, the United States president said that the summit could still go on as planned.

The report by the official Korean Central News Agency did not say when the visit would take place, but the two sanctions-hit nations have been allies for decades and Washington has accused the North of assisting Syria with its weapons programmes.

Washington has demanded that the North agree to a "complete, verifiable and irreversible" end to Pyongyang's nuclear program, which is close to the point where it could threaten U.S. cities with missile strikes.

The letter for the US President from North Korea's Kim Jong Un is due to be delivered on Friday by high-ranking official Kim Yong Chol who met with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in NY.

Kim Yong Chol, a close aide of Kim Jong Un and vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee, is the most senior North Korean official to meet top US officials for talks in the United States in almost two decades. The North said agreed that the liaison office should be established as quickly as possible and proposed the event celebrating the June 15 Declaration to be held in the South, the ministry said.

Russian Federation is the latest major nation to reach out to North Korea since Trump accepted Kim's proposal for a summit to defuse tensions.
