Lopetegui sacked as Spain coach two days before World Cup debut

Julen Lopetegui's position as Spain boss was called into serious question just 48 hours ahead of La Roja's World Cup opener against Portugal, according to furious Spanish press reports on Wednesday (Jun 13), after he was named the new Real Madrid coach.

Spain's FA have appointed former Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro as their new coach, after they sensationally sacked Julen Lopetegui earlier today.

"The negotiations [between Lopetegui and Real Madrid] have occurred without any information to the Spanish FA and we were informed just five minutes before the press release". Rubiales then announced his decision to part ways with Lopetgui, saying the federation was "compelled to act" because of the betrayal. "The federation has its values and it has to maintain them", Rubiales said. I have spoken with the players, and I can guarantee that they will do everything they can with the new coaching staff, we are in a very hard situation. Maybe this is tough now, but in the end it will make us stronger.

Lopetegui was stunningly sacked as Spain coach on Wednesday, just a day before the beginning of the World Cup.

"There's a lot to do". The Spanish team is the team of all Spain.

Spain have confirmed the sacking of their football team manager Julen Lopetegui just 24 hours before the start of the World Cup 2018 in Russian Federation.

In a brief statement to announce the appointment, the Madrid giants said Lopetegui had been appointed on a three-year contract.

Almost 30 years ago, MI faced nearly the same situation as Spain when coach Bill Frieder announced before the NCAA tournament that he would leave after the season to take over Arizona State.

The 51-year-old took over as Spain coach in 2016 following the retirement of Vicente Del Bosque who led his country to victory in the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship.

He has kept Spain unbeaten through 20 matches in charge and guided it to a first-place finish in a qualifying group that included Italy for the 2018 World Cup.

"So I think everybody will be happy with it, but mostly because Real were surprised by the departure of Zidane and had to react as soon as possible".

The development came a day after it emerged he would be replacing Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid manager in time for next season.

"We're all hurt by this situation, I've told the players my reasons for doing it and they understand".

"I do not feel betrayed, Lopetegui, while he has been with us, has done an impeccable job, another is how this has been done, without knowledge of the federation".
