With few sources of information other than the state-run media, gossip and word of mouth, most North Koreans are still largely in the dark about the momentous - and potentially life-changing - events that are about to take place outside of their isolated nation.

The two leaders discussed relations between their countries, developments in North Korea and the region, including recent positive developments on the Korean peninsula, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

So the summit was almost derailed by talk from Trump's hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton of a "Libya model" of disarmament.

US and North Korean officials are set to meet Monday morning in Singapore to make final preparations for Tuesday's meeting. He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.

If the second summit goes ahead, it may be followed by a summit in Washington in September, the report said.

The Trump-Kim summit is expected to cost about S$20 million ($15 million), Lee told Singaporean media on Sunday, with security costs representing about half the total.

Under Kim, Pyongyang has made rapid progress in its weapons technology, carrying out by far its most powerful nuclear test to date previous year and launching missiles capable of reaching the United States mainland.

It was only Monday morning North Korea time that the Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, reported Kim was in Singapore, had met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and would meet Trump on Tuesday.

A jet carrying Mr Kim landed on Sunday afternoon local time amid huge security precautions on the city-state island. He has also raised the possibility of further summits.
