Edmonton likely to host matches, as North America wins bid

The 2026 World Cup is officially coming to the United States, Mexico and Canada, and a joint statement Wednesday indicates Denver will push to host matches in the quadrennial worldwide soccer tournament.

South African stood disgraced on Wednesday as the country that received the overwhelming support of African countries when they won the right to host the 2010 World Cup, refused to vote for Morocco to host the 2026 World Cup.

The soccer showpiece will return to the USA for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

Further clouding the issue, former U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati - who's still a member of the FIFA Council - told ESPN's Sam Borden on Wednesday that the council will have the final call on automatic bids. "Football today is the only victor".

2018 will be the 21st Fifa World Cup, 88 years after the inaugural tournament in Uruguay (1930) and for the first time in Russian Federation.

Bringing the World Cup to North America would produce staggering revenues of $14 billion, the bid predicted, and could mean as much as $50 million more in distributions to each member nation.

"Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup is a rare and important moment to demonstrate that we are all truly united through sport", Cordeiro said.

The World Cup will expand to 48 teams and 80 games for 2026 and the US will stage 60 of those matches. The United States is likely to have 10 cities selected to host games, while Mexico and Canada are expected to each have three.

"Before even giving our official candidacy of the city of Montreal (for the World Cup as part of the United 2026 bid) the (Olympic Installations Board) and the provincial government already said that they were going to invest the money in the retractable roof", Filato said. The stadium has also hosted World Cup qualifying games in the past.

"Overall we scored solidly in the bid and we know we have the best stadium in the country to host soccer", he said.

Despite the latest setback, Morocco vowed to continue its bid to host the tournament in future. "MetLife Stadium was included in the bid book as a recommended site for the final and we look forward to working with Federation Internationale de Football Association to finalize plans in the coming years", read the statement from the stadium.

Just to add to the complexity, there was a third option for all voters: neither Morocco or United and we would have had to start a new bidding process. There is also no National Football League stadium within Portland that could be used.

Joking aside though, the US has a track record of putting on quality events, whether that be the 1994 World Cup, the Olympic Games and beyond.
