Insomniac's new Spider-Man trailer shows off a sinister group of villains

The long-awaited Spider-Man PS4 video game debuted a new trailer at Sony's E3 showcase this week, and it's a smorgasbord of action, sleek graphics, and sinister villains.

Spider-Man is out September 7th.

Besides the four long presentations, the Sony event hosted a few third party announcements for new games that will be coming to all platforms.

Sony took most of its time hyping games that have already been announced, in a odd stage show that brought attendees from one themed room to another. It's clear to see that Ghost of Tsushima is really nailing a distinct and cinematic aesthetic, instantly evoking romanticised imagery from classic samurai movies.

When the weird (but entertaining) PlayStation media briefing ended the night before the opening of the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show in Los Angeles, Sony Interactive Entertainment ushered us out into a Spider-Man-themed after party.

That doesn't mean that these games don't look excellent, though.

We got a violent, extended demo of The Last of Us, Part II that showed us more of Ellie's personal life, the samurais of Ghost of Tsushima, the Pirates of the Caribbean world from Kingdom Hearts III and yet another weird trailer for Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding.

Ghost of Tsushima has been at the top of my list since it was announced in 2017.

The story might seem like a simple enough take on Morales that doesn't appear to offer much at face value aside from an uplifting story about the character winning a competition, but the robotics talk gets so specific that it might be hinting at how Morales will help Spider-Man in the game.

The game definitely screams Sucker Punch with its smooth, seamless gameplay. However, it's a very, very different setting for them, and I was impressed by the nuance in how Jin moved in and out of combat, from drawing the sword and striking the enemy in a single motion, to cleaning it in the crook of his elbow and sheathing it once more.

In 2004, Activision and developer Treyarch released Spider-Man 2: The Game, which was the first time that a game adaptation of Spider-Man physically connected the hero's webs to the buildings around him. The mentioning of the motion-detecting robot was quite specific in the article about the character's award-winning creation, so that might end up being a gadget in Spider-Man's arsenal.
