Trump at G7: Misses Macron meeting, suggests bringing Russian Federation back

"We've had really a very good relationship, very special", the USA president said of Macron, a day after the two leaders had exchanged terse messages on Twitter.

The summit is expected to focus on trade relations amid the ongoing dispute over President Donald Trump imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union.

President Trump has refused to budge on his tariffs against Canada and European countries.

While there have been disputes over policy, analysts say the current dust-ups between the Trump administration and longtime USA allies point to a potential shift in worldwide dynamics. Trump ended that temporary relief this month, seeking to pressure the other countries to cut new trade agreements with the U.S. Japan was never granted a waiver, despite Prime Mininster Shinzo Abe's pleas.

He will arrive at the annual gathering, held this year in Quebec, but will leave on Saturday morning before the event is over, heading to Singapore for his highly anticipated summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"We are in agreement that a return of Russian Federation to the G-7 can not happen unless substantial progress is made in terms of the problems with Ukraine", Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

Despite the president describing his relationship with the other leaders as "a 10", conversations between the world's largest industrialized countries were thought to be intense as the allies faced off with Trump over tariffs his administration has imposed on them.

President Donald Trump's trade adviser says: "There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door".

North Korea's Kim to tour Singapore sites on eve of summit
On Tuesday, June 12, the first-ever meeting of sitting leaders of the United States and North Korea will take place in Singapore . Trump went from one global leadership summit to another this weekend, leaving the G-7 conference in Canada to fly to Singapore .

That wrestling cry would have been an apt announcement at the G-7 summit, what with the USA and other heads of state at each other's throats using the thrust and parry of rude remarks and social media to pummel each other.

"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with US (guess they were bragging and got caught!)".

Canada and the European Union have denounced the United States tariffs and Ottawa has proposed levies on a range of USA goods next month while the European Union has pledged its own retaliatory measures.

Robertson said there are other issues on which there will be agreement and the primary significance of these meetings anyhow is that "leaders get together and have those frank discussions". Trump will skip sessions on climate change and the environment.

The increasingly critical tone from allies is a shift after leaders spent the past year and a half seeking to woo and cajole the American president.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around".

"America stands very much alone as they enter this G-7", Heather Conley, director of the Europe program for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told reporters on a press call.
