Net Neutrality Repeal Goes Into Effect

Net Neutrality Repeal Goes Into Effect

If you're interested in letting your representatives know where you stand on net neutrality and how you'd like them to vote, you can see a tally of who has and hasn't agreed to support net neutrality here.

Net neutrality is no longer the law of the land. For most of the country, unfettered access to the internet now depends on the goodwill of their service providers.

Why is net neutrality such a big deal?

More than 20 states have sued the FCC, and several governors have passed executive orders requiring ISPs doing business with their states to uphold net neutrality.

Net Neutrality protections prohibited internet providers from favoring or blocking access to particular products or websites. But late in the Obama administration, the FCC opened up an inquiry to see if they violated the general conduct provisions.

Q. Why are the rules going away?

Critics say the FTC is backward-looking and there will be no rules to keep ISPs from hurting consumers in the first place.

How will the internet providers be regulated now?

Q. What's the impact of the repeal? Under the new policy, a violation might occur when regulators find out that an Internet provider has been blocking websites without saying so. Under a new plan, the Federal Trade Commission will police the ISPs.

Q. Is my Internet service about to slow to a crawl, like some activists claim?

The U.S. open internet rules expired on Monday, handing sweeping new powers to internet providers to block, throttle or offer paid "fast lanes" for web traffic, but a court battle remains ahead.

ISPs will have to disclose changes they make because of deregulation.

Any changes are likely to happen slowly, as companies assess how much consumers will tolerate.

To take a classic example, this means Comcast couldn't just choose to slow down a service like Netflix to make its own streaming video service more competitive, nor could it try to squeeze Netflix to pay more money to be part of a so-called internet fast lane.

Net neutrality is now a thing of the past. One danger, according to consumer advocates, is that those new models could end up making it harder to discover innovative new services. Net neutrality rules were created for two reasons.

Q. Yes, finally! What's an example?

In May, the Senate voted to overturn the FCC's repeal of the Obama-era regulations.

But wait. What exactly is net neutrality? The Senate already passed a historic bipartisan resolution disapproving the repeal.

Q. What are its chances in the House?

But this isn't a solution for some supporters. Here's what we can expect from tomorrow's internet. And consumer groups note that should the FCC repeal survive the looming lawsuits, the end result won't be pretty for American consumers. FCC chairman Ajit Pai joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss why he thinks the rollback is "tremendously positive" for consumers.
