Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement

Canada last week announced retaliatory tariffs on C$16.6 billion ($12.8 billion) worth of us exports and said it will challenge USA steel and aluminum tariffs under the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization.

Despite weeks of harsh rhetoric aimed at European Union leaders, an upbeat President Trump said Friday that he and America's closest allies had made progress on the first day of the G7 meeting in Canada.

He is now raging on Twitter about a statement given by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following Trump's early exit.

Trump said they are based on legitimate national security concerns, and he said he stood firm against the concerns of his fellow G7 leaders during their talks.

In the weeks leading up to the summit, he imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union.

Mr. Trump responded directly to this statement in a tweet Saturday evening, writing that Trudeau "acted so meek and mild" and then held the press conference afterward criticizing the U.S.

Before jumping on Air Force One to fly to Canada, which is hosting the summit in La Malbaie north of Quebec City, Trump called for a return to the body's pre-2014 "G8" formula. Trump is heading to Singapore, where he is scheduled to meet on Monday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

But his early departure means he will miss a working session among the leaders on climate change and clean energy, as well as talks among the G7 and poorer countries focused on the health of oceans.

"We have to have deals that are fair", Trump said.

"If a deal isn't made, that would be a very bad thing for Canada and a very bad thing for Mexico".
