The decades-long drive to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons

"This is a leader who really is an unknown personality", Trump added of Kim.

"He's got an opportunity the likes of which very few people have ever had".

North Korea objects to the notion that it should give up its program up front and quickly with little concessions from the U.S. side, said Frank Aum, senior expert on North Korea at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

Last year it carried out by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched missiles capable of reaching the United States mainland, sending tensions soaring to a level unseen in years as a newly-elected Trump traded threats of war and colorful personal insults with Kim, with Trump dubbed a "dotard" and Kim "Little Rocket Man".

Asked how he would be able to make such a distinction, he said: "My touch, my feel".

But even the merit of the event itself - long sought by the North, and which Trump apparently impulsively agreed to in March, reportedly without consulting his advisers - has been called into question. North Korea has previously used the term to demand the US pull thousands of troops out of South Korea and end its so-called "nuclear umbrella" agreement to protect South Korea, which lacks nukes. "I think that he's going to surprise on the upside, very much on the upside", Trump said.

When the topic of a trade war flaring up as a result of hiked tariffs that Trump promised to enforce, he declared that European countries and Canada need the US more than the country needs them.

The leaders meet on Tuesday on the resort island of Sentosa and talks are expected to centre on ending the North's nuclear weapons and missiles programmes in return for diplomatic and economic incentives.

Somalia conflict: One US soldier killed, four wounded in firefight
There are now 500 troops stationed in Somalia fighting Islamic terrorism, but there could be more due to shadow wars. The terrorist group al-Shabaab, the local al-Qaeda affiliate, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

As a result, police will make stricter checks of people and personal property and items such as public address systems and remotely piloted aircraft systems will be prohibited in the special event areas.

"Kim Jong Un might bring good looking female bodyguards to embody a more approachable image", Ahn said.

"I hope that after this summit the world is a safe place", said the faux Trump.

Historically, North Korea hasn't shied away from signing agreements, but in the implementation of the agreements, things fall apart. But following a visit to the USA from Kim Yong Chol, a top North Korean official, Mr. Trump confirmed the summit was back on.

As he has in recent days, however, the president again acknowledged that the summit is unlikely to achieve a major breakthrough, stating that at minimum he would like to "start a dialogue" with Kim.

For the first time, a sitting U.S. President will meet the North Korean Chairman.

"Everyone said, you know, the haters, they say, 'Oh, you're giving him a meeting.' Give me a break, OK?" A planned summit between Trump and Kim will be held in Singapore on June 12. And by the way, we have worked very well with their people, they have many people now in Shanghai, our people have been - in Singapore - our people have been working very, very well with the representatives of North Korea and I think we're going to come out fine. "I don't want to waste his time".

Kim Jong Un's motivation for a treaty may be, in part, linked to eventually getting USA troops - 28,500 of them - out of the southern part of the peninsula; many believe that the North sees this as the first step in paving the way for a single Korea ruled by Pyongyang.
