92 million accounts for DNA testing site MyHeritage found online

According to MyHeritage, the breach took place on October 26, 2017, and affects users who signed up for an account through that date. Its database now has DNA samples from over 1.25 million people. Since Oct 26, 2017 (the date of the breach) and the present we have not seen any activity indicating that any MyHeritage accounts had been compromised. "This means that anyone gaining access to the hashed passwords does not have the actual passwords", MyHeritage assured.

The details contained "all the email addresses of users who signed up to MyHeritage up to October 26, 2017, and their hashed passwords".

In some past breaches, however, hashing schemes have been successfully converted back into passwords.

In an announcement, the company revealed that its Chief Information Security Officer received a message from a security researcher on June 4 that he had discovered a file named myheritage on a server outside of the company.

The Israeli-based company's information security team reviewed the file and confirmed the data was from MyHeritage.

Similarly, it emerged last August that Warner Bros is also developing a Joker origin story without Leto. The news of Leto's Joker movie going forward all-but-confirms the strategy.

Mr Deutsch added: "Immediately upon receipt of the file, MyHeritage's Information Security Team analysed the file and began an investigation to determine how its contents were obtained and to identify any potential exploitation of the MyHeritage system".

A full report will likely take a while; the company is planning to hire an external security firm to look into the breach, and is working on notifying relevant authorities under US laws and GDPR, among others. Aside from informing users, MyHeritage stated it is taking steps to notify relevant authorities, as per GDPR.

There is "no reason to believe" the systems with genetic data "have been compromised", Deutsch said.

However, MyHeritage has reemphasized in its statement that it hosts its DNA data on "a segregated system", which includes added layers of security, and no data has been breached. In the meantime, it's probably worth changing your MyHeritage password, and checking you have different passwords for every service you use.

"If you do choose to provide genetic data to an organisation, it's vital to enable the maximum security settings, turning on features such as two factor authentication once available, and check what you are "agreeing" to when sharing it, as you may be unwittingly giving access - or even consent - to share this data more widely than is needed, even to other third party organisations".
