What’s New In iOS 12?

Apple today unveiled new features coming in iOS 12 that are meant to protect its users' digital wellbeing.

"Some apps send us flurries of notifications trying to draw us in for fear of missing out", said Apple's senior vice-president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, speaking to a 6,000-strong audience at WWDC, Apple's annual developer conference, at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose on Monday. The new features will be a part of their iOS 12 operating system update. With iOS 12, Apple is doubling down on how much users use their phone everyday.

However iOS 12 is expected to introduce some improvements to Siri, one of which is a new app called Siri Shortcuts.

Notifications are getting improved in iOS 12.

A new app called "Screen Time" will offer iPhone and iPad users a dashboard highlighting how much time they have spent using which apps, how many notifications they receive, how often they pick up their device and how their usage patterns compare to the average.

With a new iOS 12 feature called Shortcuts, any app can add quick actions to Siri for fast, more streamlined access.

While the iPhone is Apple's most important product, iOS software is the heart of the device.

Apple also showed off its newest operating system Mojave, which includes a "Dark Mode" consisting of subtle colors promising a "distraction-free work environment that's easy on the eyes". There are also enhanced notifications that'll let you interact with third-party apps, letting you do things like modify the time of a reservation with Yelp on your wrist. You will also be woken up to a new screen that gives you a summary of your day.

Apple will group notifications so that they no longer appear one by one. iMessage, for example, will stick together as one notification that you can remove at once-rather than forcing a user to swipe notifications away one at a time. Users will be able to customize their appearance down to freckles, skin tone and accessories.

Apple has grabbed another major Photos feature for iOS 12 in the form of intelligent sharing suggestions.

FaceTime will soon be able to support video chats with up to 32 people.

With iOS 12, Apple sort of acknowledged this slowdown on older devices, while simultaneously announcing efforts to speed up performance. Group FaceTime, watchOS 5, Dolby Atmos, and tvOSAre you ready for Group FaceTime? A new Shortcuts app will let you build multi-step shortcuts, too.

Parents can use the new Downtime feature (which can be found in the Screen Time settings) to block everything on their children's phones except for selected apps and phone calls for an hourly time range.

The Siri upgrade will integrate the voice-based technology with more outside apps.

By tapping and "drawing" a line with the app and your device's camera, it provides measurements of 3D objects like a suitcase - in inches and centimetres. The update follows on from iOS 11 and is focussed on stability and performance. Everyone else will have to wait until the Public Beta becomes available later in June or until the final release, which usually happens in the fall.
