Singapore launches 'World Peace' medallion to mark Trump-Kim summit

But even the suggestion of Assad's outreach to North Korea is certain to ripple through White House efforts to define an agenda for the planned June 12 summit in Singapore between Trump and Kim. Trump aims to persuade the North Korean dictator to give up his country's nuclear arsenal in exchange for relief from US economic sanctions.

North Korea's government, which is no stranger to hosting lavish events like military parades and party congresses of its own, has ample funds to cover important meetings for Kim.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has stepped forward to resolve this issue.

Some analysts said Kim was replacing older officers who were wedded to the country's nuclear doctrine with loyalists who would follow any changes he may make following the summit.

Trump cancelled the on-off North Korea summit in late May, blaming the country's "tremendous anger and open hostility".

Trump immediately announced that the summit was back on for June 12 in Singapore.

After a war of words that lasted months, it aims to start a discussion on ending the North's nuclear weapons programme in return for diplomatic and economic incentives.

National Security Adviser John Bolton was absent from President Donald Trump's meeting with a top North Korean official last week.

Ms Sanders called the letter that top North Korean official Kim Yong-chol delivered from Kim Jong-un to Mr Trump on Friday "interesting" but wouldn't comment on its contents.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects the construction of the "Wonsan-Kalma shore Tourist Zone" in this undated photo released by KCNA in Pyongyang May 25, 2018.

The historic meeting between Mr Trump and Kim would be the first between sitting United States and North Korean leaders. "All three of them have held very sensitive and high-level positions under Kim Jong Un, they're very loyal (to him), and all have experience interacting with foreign delegations".

Donald Trump had responded by saying, "I too have a nuclear button, but it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his, and my button works".

There has also been speculation Kim does not wish to leave North Korea for an extended period of time as this may encourage any remaining opponents to his rule to seize the opportunity to stage a coup. "North Korea, even while it's holding talks with the United States, will be considering maintaining support from China and Russian Federation, or both countries, as an insurance method as well as a means to lure capital".

This combined file photo shows Sung Kim (L), U.S. ambassador to the Philippines, and North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.
