Mueller's Team Accuses Manafort Of Witness Tampering

Mueller has asked a federal judge to jail Manafort or alter the terms of his pretrial release after accusing him of witness tampering - and a former federal prosecutor told MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle just how bad things have gotten for the former Trump campaign chairman.

For one, prosecutors are likely to introduce evidence of witness tampering at Manafort's upcoming trial to show consciousness of guilt, or a guilty mind. Manafort attempted to contact one of the witnesses in February after a federal grand jury in Washington returned a "superseding indictment", which accused him of having "secretly retained" a group of European officials to lobby for positions favorable to Ukraine in the US.

The communications were "in an effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise hide evidence", Domin wrote. A minute later, he allegedly followed up by writing, "Basically P wants to give him a quick summary that he says to everybody (which is true) that our friends never lobbied in the USA, and the goal of the program was European Union".

Many white-collar prosecutions are built by charging people lower down in an organization and then "flipping" those defendants into prosecution witnesses to get leniency in their sentencing.

Manafort is the most senior member of Trump's campaign to be indicted, though the charges do not relate to campaign activities.

Paul Manafort, the former chairman of President Donald Trump's campaign, has been accused of attempting to tamper with witness testimony.

In February, the 69-year-old pleaded not guilty to charges of money laundering, illegal lobbying and lying, setting up the first trial to result from Mueller's investigation, due to begin on September 17.

Manafort allegedly paid the group some $2.5 million in 2012 and 2013 alone. I think, however, they were doing a number on Trump himself.

The motion seeks to have Manafort's condition release revoked.

Trump has denied collusion with Russian Federation and called Mueller's investigation a 'witch hunt'.

While both claims lack strong legal foundation, according to most experts, they signalled that the president is doubling down against Mueller's probe into campaign collusion with Russian Federation and whether Trump sought to obstruct justice.

The Russia special counsel has submitted a filing claiming that Manafort tried to contact multiple witness to influence their testimony.

Among those indicted are several former Trump campaign and administration staff, including Mr Manafort; Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser; Rick Gates, the former Trump deputy campaign chair; and George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the campaign.
