Tiger on the move at rain-hit Memorial Tournament

But DeChambeau's effort missed on the low side, setting up a three-man playoff that sent the three players back to the 18th tee. First the mid-range birdie putts started sliding left and right, then the short miss that has plagued him all week caught up again at the turn.

Niemann, a former world number one amateur, had shared the first-round lead with Matsuyama and Mexico's Abraham Ancerer and he kept the foot on the accelerator with seven birdies against three bogeys.

Tiger Woods has put in a superb second round display at The Memorial in OH after reaching five under before play was stopped because of the threat of lightning.

But he found himself trailing by two strokes as a calm and composed Cantlay took control of the tournament with four birdies in six holes from the third before DeChambeau pulled one back at the 11th.

Woods will attempt to equal the tournament's largest 54-hole comeback at five shots off the pace, but will no doubt draw from starting the final round four shots back during his 2012 Memorial victory.

An eagle from 95 yards at the par-five 11th then moved the fist-pumping Woods to five-under.

However, DeChambeau rolled in a nine-footer on a similar line to the one he missed in regulation play, to take the title.

Sarri odds-on for Chelsea job

Halep, Sharapova moves to third round
Ten-time champion Rafael Nadal breezed into the third round and a clash against childhood friend Richard Gasquet. The Australian saved a match point to hold for 4-5 in the third and forced Williams to serve for the match.

"I want to play well in front of my family", he said.

Byeong Hun An played bogey-free for a 69 and was two shots behind, while Justin Rose dropped two shots over the last three holes for a 69 and was four back.

"I know I shot 68 today, but that's probably the highest score I probably could've shot today", the five-time Memorial victor said.

Despite struggling mightily with his ball striking right from the earlier-than-expected start-the last group teed off at 9:30 local time in anticipation of storms that never materialized-DeChambeau, who began the round with a one-shot lead, managed to scramble his was to a one-under 71. The last time he won the Memorial Tournament was in 2012. Thomas, Johnson (No. 2), Justin Rose (No. 3) and Jordan Spieth (No. 5) have a mathematical chance of reaching No. 1.

"It's a strong field on the leader-board and I think everybody's going to go out there and try to make the most birdies possible", Niemann said.

If you're a Tiger fan, the exciting news heading into the U.S. Open in two weeks is that this is as good as he's looked all year - and probably in the last half decade - from a swing standpoint.

He finished with a 4-under-par 68, but much like Friday when he shot 67, he walked off disappointed rather than exuberant.
