FBI Tells Computer Users To Reboot Routers, Warns Of Major Malware Infection

The FBI believes hackers are blocking web traffic and collecting information that passes through these routers.

According to reports by Cisco's Talos Intelligence, at least 500,000 routers in 54 countries were targeted by the malware, which is called VPNFilter. Private cybersecurity firms have said the group, also known as Fancy Bear, was behind the 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee and likely affiliated with the GRU, the Russian military intelligence unit. That way, you can set up the router again with the same information and all your devices will re-connect easily.

"We have high confidence that Russian Federation has carried out a coordinated campaign to gain access to enterprise, small office, home office routers known as SOHO routers and residential routers, and the switches and connectors worldwide", Rob Joyce, special assistant to the president and cybersecurity coordinator at the White House told journalists, according to ZDNET.

The full steps you should take to remove VPNFilter and protect your router are listed below.

Thankfully for the film, its budgeted at $110 million, so the film is on its way to turning in a good profit. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore.

The malware targets routers produced by several manufacturers. Many routers come with default passwords such as "password" or "1234", which the owners never reset, making them vulnerable to hacking. However, Stage 1 of VPNFilter will persist after a reboot, potentially allowing the attackers to reinfect the compromised routers.

For this reason, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has suggested that everyone reboot their router in order to disable Stage 2 and Stage 3 and to also allow the Federal Bureau of Investigation to get a list of infected victims and the types of routers that are affected.

"Well, it will only because the government also seized the website that's doing the infection so if you get rid of the source, the command and control center, and then you clean up the individual devices, we should be OK", said technology analyst Larry Magid.
