Kilauea Eruption Sends Ash And Lava Bombs Flying, Forces Evacuations

The county of Hawaii issued a civil defense message early on Monday, warning those in affected areas to stay indoors with windows closed and to drive with caution.

At the flow's current speed Saturday afternoon, officials estimate it may cross the highway in the next several hours.

When the lava hits the water it results in a gas mixture made up of hydrochloric acid gas (HCl), steam and tiny volcanic glass particles.

In recent days, the lava began to move more quickly and emerge from the ground in greater volume.

On April 30, the floor of the Puu Oo Crater, on the volcano's East Rift Zone, collapsed, sending its pool of lava back underground. On Friday afternoon, the flow ramped up and crossed a road. Fortunately, on Sunday, a large crack opened near the ocean and swallowed some of the lava into the ground, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The Coast Guard is warning boats to stay away from where lava is flowing into the ocean on Hawaii's Big Island unless they have prior approval.

The greatest ongoing hazard stems from the lava flows and the hot, toxic gases spewing from open fissure vents close to homes and critical infrastructure, said Charles Mandeville of the US Geological Survey's volcano hazards program.

Authorities handed out around 2,000 masks for protection as people living near Hawaii's Kilauea volcano. The rock "hit him on the shin and shattered everything from there down on his leg", Janet Snyder, spokesperson for the Hawaii County mayor, told Hawaii News Now.

In a tower of lava, the Big Island's volcanic beginnings burst again into view.

A stream of lava blocked a Hawaii highway that serves as an escape route for coastal residents fleeing the Kilauea volcano. By afternoon, lava had isolated 40 homes in the area.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano spewed ash almost six miles into the sky on Thursday as it explosively erupted. Kilauea erupted at least twice over the weekend.

Scientists say more explosions that could spawn even minor amounts of ashfall could happen any time.

There is a new health threat tonight on Hawaii's Big Island. Four people have already been evacuated by helicopter. They were advising people to shelter in place and await further instructions.

Authorities have warned residents to stay away from the neighborhoods evacuated, warning that toxic sulfur dioxide seeping out of almost two dozen fissures could prove deadly. The volcanic activity has destroyed multiple homes and injured one man's leg.

County officials have been encouraging residents in the district to prepare for potential evacuations.
