FDA warns parents - teething medications are not safe for babies

The Food & Drug Administration posted a press release on its website today with the headline, "FDA takes action against the use of OTC benzocaine teething products due to serious safety risk, lack of benefit".

The FDA warned about the potential dangers of benzocaine in 2006 and 2011, and has said parents shouldn't use the products in children younger than 2. "If companies do not comply, the FDA will initiate a regulatory action to remove these products from the market". Also, the agency is requesting that companies add new warnings to all other benzocaine oral health products to describe certain serious risks.

Since 2009, 119 cases of benzocaine-associated methemoglobinemia have been reported to the FDA, 4 of which were fatal.

Some safe options include rubber teething products, a cold, wet wash cloth, or parents rubbing the baby's gums with a clean finger. Symptoms include rapid heart rate, lightheadedness, difficulty breathing, sleepiness, headache, skin that is pale and nails that are blue or gray.

Scott Gottlieb, the FDA commissioner, recently proclaimed about the sunscreen products.

Now, it wants teething products off the market, noting there is little evidence they actually work. The FDA warned consumers about stopping the overuse of the teething products containing benzocaine.
