Pompeo: US goal with allies to stop Iran's threats

European powers must continue buying crude and protect Iranian oil sales from USA pressure, and promise they won't seek new negotiations on Iran's ballistic missile programme and Middle East activities, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's official website said on Wednesday.

On May 21, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo laid out Washington's 12 demands for a new nuclear deal with Iran.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wants to meet with European allies in the next few weeks to discuss a comprehensive strategy towards Iran after the withdrawal of the US from the global nuclear agreement with Tehran. And Trump appears to say that North Korea might not need to get rid of its nuclear weapons after all.

Pompeo's speech detailed Washington's approach after President Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the 2015 global agreement in which Iran limited its nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions.

The United States has warned its European allies they will have to take part in the "strongest sanctions in history" against Iran or face the consequences, as it took a tough line on the regime.

Federica Mogherini, the European Union foreign policy chief, issued a statement on Friday saying that the 28-nation bloc is united in preserving the 2015 global nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA.

On May 8, President Donald Trump withdrew the USA from the UN-endorsed nuclear agreement, a move which Salehi described as "unwise".

Khamenei said Iran reserves the right to expand its nuclear program beyond the limits of the accord unless European banks facilitate trade and Europeans provide assurances that they will buy Iranian oil if the U.S. attempts to disrupt crude sales.

The US Air Force just ruined the 'Laurel or Yanny' meme

Under the requirements, "Iran has no possible path to a nuclear weapon, ever", Pompeo said.

The list of directives included withdrawing from Syria, ending support for Houthi rebels in Yemen and promising to never process plutonium.

"Pompeo and other U.S. officials are trapped in old illusions".

In the wake of Trump's decision, the leaders of Great Britain, Germany and France called on other participants in the deal to continue fulfilling it.

"Iran was committed to the deal".

"If they restart their nuclear program, they will have big problems, bigger problems than they've ever had before", he said, also threatening to "crush" Iran's terrorist proxies around the world".

Pompeo on Wednesday told a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing the administration meant to work with "as many partners, friends and allies as possible" to stop what he described as all of Tehran's nuclear and non-nuclear threats.
