Microsoft reportedly plans $400 Surface tablet to rival $329 iPad

Microsoft reportedly plans $400 Surface tablet to rival $329 iPad

According to market researcher IDC, Microsoft sold nearly 725,000 tablets in the first quarter of 2018, up 1.8 percent from a year earlier, whereas Apple sold 9.1 million iPads in the same period.

While the Surface Pro is certainly a capable tablet with a lot to offer, it's significantly more expensive than the base iPad models resulting in a lower market share when compared to tablets from Apple.

The tablets are expected to be about 20 percent lighter than the high-end models but will have around four hours fewer when it comes to battery life.

A credible Bloomberg report claims that Microsoft will deliver a $400 Surface-branded tablet by late 2018. For your reference, the Surface Pro can last up to 13 hours on a single charge. Microsoft was in second place with 26% of devices shipped running Windows, while Apple lost ground last year, dropping to just 11% iOS devices, down almost 4% from the year before. As always, there will also be 64GB or 128GB variants, along with an LTE model for cellular connectivity too. Following its failure, Microsoft tried again in 2015 with Surface 3 for a similar price, only to stop its production by 2016. Seeing that the Surface line isn't always bundled with a cover; and picking one up can easily set customers back by several hundred ringgit. This is not a re-run of the Surface RT, as full-blown Windows will be supported. For reference, iPad features a 9.7-inch display while iPad Pro is available in two screen variants with a 10.5-inch screen and a larger 12.9-inch screen. The tablets will still have the kickstand for upright typing and watching video.

Citing "people familiar with the matter", Bloomberg suggests that pressure to find a "high-volume hit" rivaling iPad unit sales has compelled the company to redesign Surface to be more like the iPad.

Microsoft has had their hand in the tablet market with the Surface line, but with a different approach. The new giant conference room board Surface Hub 2 is due for 2019, and it will use a 50.5-inch multi-touch display and a 4K+ resolution.
