Mary Scanlon wins crowded primary for newly drawn safe Democratic Pennsylvania district

Voters in Idaho, Nebraska, Oregon and Pennsylvania head to the polls Tuesday and the outcomes will help clarify the ever-evolving midterms picture. "Our right to vote is so critical, especially in these really challenging times", voter Elaine Petrossian told CBS Philadelphia.

Also on tap Tuesday are contested primaries for lieutenant governor and a slew of crowded U.S. House races following Pennsylvania's court-ordered redrawing of congressional district boundaries.

Republican Rick Saccone - who lost a high-profile special election earlier this year in the old 18th District to Democrat Conor Lamb - lost again on Tuesday.

But Republicans sent their own messages: In their U.S. Senate primary, the GOP nominated U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, an illegal immigration hard-liner who boasts of his close ties to the president.

Barletta had paid little attention to his Republican rival, state Rep. Jim Christiana, during the primary campaign.

Pennsylvania: Could Democratic infighting cost the party winnable seats?

"The media said that Donald Trump could not win in Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania put Donald Trump in the White House", Barletta told his supporters in Hazleton. "Voted for Tax Cuts, unlike Bob Casey, who listened to Tax Hikers Pelosi and Schumer!"

The state has shown signs of trending Democratic since Trump's historic defeat of Clinton.

A perennial battleground state, Pennsylvania also faces a governor's race and a Senate contest that Democratic incumbents are favored to win but could become competitive. Bob Casey in the fall.

Casey, the son of a late former governor, has strong name recognition and has won five statewide elections, including two as auditor general and one as state treasurer. Robert Casey Jr., who has stockpiled almost $10 million for the race.

Barletta, who was elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010, has taken a hard line on immigration in the Senate. Pat Toomey won by fewer than 2 percentage points.

Scott Wallace won the nomination in another district northeast of Philadelphia that Democrats hope to turn.

There are several seats up for grab in the Democratic Party runoff election, including nominees for governor, District 37 state representative, 197th state district court judge and justice of the peace Precinct 2, Place 2. Pennsylvania first started allowing lieutenant governors to serve a second term in the 1970s.

Democrats must wrest 23 seats nationwide from Republicans to take over the House, and analysts say the party could gain as many as five seats in Pennsylvania alone in the general congressional election in November. Brendan Boyle will face Republican David Torres.

In the Pennsylvania Senate race, incumbent Democratic Sen.

"I think it's great that we are finally doing something about gerrymandering and I hope this makes more people go out and vote because their votes actually count now", said Diane Dalto.

Pennsylvania voters have swung back and forth in recent races.

A redrawn congressional map in Pennsylvania just three months ago has left candidates scrambling as four states prepare to hold primaries.

Lincoln City Councilwoman Jane Raybould won the Democratic primary to try and unseat Republican Sen.

Nebraska Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts easily defeated his primary challenger. Her primary challengers were Jack Heidel, a retired math professor from Omaha; Dennis Frank Macek, a writer and retired air conditioning technician from Lincoln; Jeffrey Lynn Stein, a professional photographer from Omaha; and Lincoln businessman Todd Watson. Wolf ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

Ten Democratic candidates were all vying for the nomination on Tuesday.

Three Republicans ran in the gubernatorial primary: political newcomers Paul Mango and Laura Ellsworth, and state Sen. Uehlinger then spent 18 years as the Central Intelligence Agency station chief in Moldova, a former Soviet republic that is now an independent country. Krist has pitched himself as a less partisan alternative to Ricketts who would work more collaboratively with the Legislature.
