North Korea to Hold 'Ceremony' for Dismantling Nuke Test Site

On Friday, Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that North Korea can look forward to "a future brimming with peace and prosperity" if it agrees to quickly give up its nuclear weapons.

Pompeo said he had "good" talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, BBC reports.

While the USA expressed willingness for private investment in North Korea, Bolton said that renewed economic sanctions against Iran after Trump's withdrawal of the US from the 2015 global accord restraining Tehran's nuclear program could be "quite dramatic".

The Trump administration is planning a first-ever meeting between a sitting USA president and a leader of North Korea for June 12 in Singapore.

In a statement carried by state media, North Korea's Foreign Ministry said that all of the tunnels at the site will be destroyed by explosion, and that observation and research facilities and ground-based guard units will also be removed.

Trump, in a tweet Saturday, thanked North Korea for its plan to dismantle the nuclear test site, calling it "a very smart and gracious gesture!" He also said Americans would also help invest in North Korean infrastructure and agriculture if Pyongyang meets US demands on ending its nuclear weapons program.

South Korea's Kang shared in Pompeo's optimism and was at pains to insist that there is no daylight between how Washington and Seoul are approaching the talks.

Some experts believe Kim may try to drag out the process or seek a deal in which he gives away his intercontinental ballistic missiles but retains some of his shorter-range arsenal in return for a reduced US military presence in the South.

In December Kim declared his nuclear force as complete following the country's most powerful nuclear test to date in September and also three flight tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles created to reach the U.S. mainland.

In announcing the plan to shut Punggye-ri last month, Kim said North Korea no longer needed to conduct tests because it had completed its goal of developing nuclear weapons.

He said if that happens, the US would allow "private sector Americans. help build out the energy grid that needs enormous amounts of electricity in North Korea".

North Korea's state news agency criticized the Japanese government Saturday for urging a resolution to the issue of Pyongyang's abductions of Japanese nationals, claiming that the issue has already been resolved.

While Kang sought to assure reporters that the USA and South Korea are unified on the matter, she was slightly more moderate on the possibility of relief, saying sanctions must remain in place "until we see visible, meaningful action taken by North Korea on the denuclearization track".

Pompeo and different USA officers have repeatedly stated they're looking for North Korea's everlasting verifiable denuclearization, whereas North Korean officers have stated that they've already achieved their nuclear aims. The U.S. has nearly 30,000 soldiers stationed in the country. "I think we have a good understanding, and I think there is complete agreement about what the ultimate objectives are".
