Number Of Salmonella Cases Linked To Eggs Continues To Rise

The Food and Drug Administration previously announced more than 207 million eggs produced by Rose Acre Farms in Seymour, Ind., were being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that a salmonella outbreak caused by recalled eggs affected 35 people in nine states.

The eggs were sold in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

As of April 16, 35 people from nine states had been sickened by the bacteria. They were sold at Walmart and Food Lion stores.

"We're disheartened by the additional reported illnesses in recent days and we apologize to anyone who may have been sickened or who has a family member or friend who may have taken ill because of any of our eggs", Gene Grabowski, a representative for Rose Acre Farms, told The Daily Meal.

Officials said more illnesses could be reported from people who ate the bad eggs after March 23.

Rose Acre Farms assures consumers that they "have already implemented numerous corrective actions" and "have also taken other steps to ensure that the farm meets or exceeds the standards of the FDA and USDA".

The affected eggs came from one of the company's farms, located in Hyde County, North Carolina. The possibly tainted eggs were distributed from the farm between January 11 and April 12.

The salmonella outbreak has been linked to eggs distributed by Rose Acre Farms, a family-owned company based in IN that claims itself to be the second-largest egg producer in the United States. CDC recommends that people just throw the eggs away or try to return the eggs for a refund.

More than 200,000 eggs were recalled at that time.

Salmonella can cause nausea, diarrhea and, in rare cases, death.

On the packaging of the recalled eggs, consumers can find the plant No. P-1065, and a Julian date range of 011 through date of 102.

The recall is the largest since 2010, when a major salmonella outbreak tied to Iowa egg farms sickened more than 1,500 people, said Bill Marler, a Seattle-based personal injury attorney who focuses on food-borne illness litigation.
