Dame Tessa Jowell dies aged 70 after battle with brain tumour

Tessa Jowell, the U.K.'s former culture secretary, has died at the age of 70.

On her birthday in September 2017, she revealed her battle with cancer and pledged to campaign for improved cancer treatment.

"At this agonising time, I hope her family can draw comfort from the fact that her legacy will be lives saved and heartbreak averted for thousands of other families".

Dame Tessa gave a moving speech in the House of Lords in January, in which she expressed her hope that "we can live well with cancer, not just die of it". "All of us, for longer".

In the early 1990s, Dame Tessa was selected to fight Dulwich as a parliamentary candidate.

"She knew she was dying and yet she was prepared to give everything she had in order to help people in the future", Blair said.

'If anyone wants to know what politics can achieve they can just look at her life and how she lived it, and how she ended it as a testimony to all that's best in politics'.

Conservative MP for Chatham and Aylesford, Tracey Crouch, said she was very sad to hear the news, adding: "She was respected across the political divide for her calm, polite manner".

Jowell is survived by her husband, David Mills, and their children Jessie and Matthew.

The statement thanked people for their "overwhelming support" since Dame Tessa became ill. The family said the funeral would be small and private, but a memorial open to all would be held later.
