Uber reckons it'll launch a flying taxi service in 2023

After Uber revealed its latest prototype for flying taxis this week during the company's Elevate Summit, the company is teaming up with NASA to study and develop a safe and efficient system for future air transportation. The new aircraft uses dedicated propulsion systems for both cruising and vertical lift, as well as the ability to carry between two and six passengers.

The quadcopter taxi has been designed for vertical take-off and landing much like those drones you see people using in parks to mess up people's quiet time. "Ultimately, where we want to go is about urban mobility and urban transport, and being a solution for the cities in which we operate".

Known as UberAIR, the travel solution will work similarly to Uber's existing automotive ride hailing service, where users will be able to request an air taxi to appropriate locations that have been referred to as skyports.

The company plans to produce thousands of short-range, electric-powered aircraft, which it says will be piloted by humans at first, but eventually fly autonomously (The Verge).

The body of this air taxi is reminiscent of the fuselage of a plane, rather than a helicopter.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Uber and NASA are now working together to figure out how the Elevate vehicles can operate safely while flying at low altitude. "This is a great concept but is a big challenge, no question about that", said CEO Paulo Cesar Silva.

Uber and its partners are working towards a goal of launching flight demonstrations in 2020 and commercial trips by 2023.

"We are seeking cities where national and local policymakers are committed to enabling the adoption of new transportation technologies", the statement said.

"NASA is excited to be partnering with Uber and others in the community to identify the key challenges facing the UAM market, and explore necessary research, development and testing requirements to address those challenges", said Shin.
