Ten Minnesota Cases linked to Romaine Lettuce E. coli Outbreak

People have gotten sick from April 20th through May 2nd, but the CDC says all evidence suggests that all illnesses are some way connected through romaine grown in the Yuma region.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning people to throw away any lettuce from the region.

Product from the Yuma growing region should no longer be on sale; however, individuals should check their refrigerators for romaine lettuce that may have been grown in the Yuma region, according to the press release.

About 135 cases of E. coli are reported in Minnesota each year, according to the MDH.

The outbreak that began in March has now spread to almost 30 states, affecting 149 people. The spinach outbreak resulted in at least 199 E. coli infections across 26 states.

"We are investigating dozens of other fields as potential sources of the [tainted] chopped Romaine lettuce", Harris said.

Symptoms of E. coli infection typically include stomach cramps and diarrhea, or bloody stool. On a per capita basis, that means there's a cluster across the Canadian border states of Minnesota (10), North Dakota (two), Montana (eight), Idaho (11) and Washington (seven). One death from California has been reported.

"If you do not know whether lettuce is romaine, do not eat it", the statement said. The largest American E. coli flare-up since 2006, when contaminated spinach was the culprit, is expected to continue for several weeks. Numerous people sickened across the country ate chopped lettuce that had been sold in bagged form to restaurants. Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region.

Besides the death recorded in California, 17 patients have developed a risky form of kidney failure, the agency said. The CDC has not issued a formal recall, but it has urged consumers to avoid all types of romaine lettuce unless they can confirm that it did not come from Yuma.

Minnesota Tuesday reported it has illnesses with onset dates in May, which points to an outbreak that is still growing.
