Facebook Reorg Divides It Into 3 Divisions, Adds Blockchain Group

Chris Cox, a longtime member of Zuckerberg's inner circle, was put in charge of Facebook's core application as well as smartphone services Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, the California-based company confirmed.

As part of a massive reorganization of its executive team, Facebook is assembling a team that will explore applications of blockchain technology.

Two other executives, Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer and Vice President of Growth Javier Olivan, will oversee other consolidated divisions, one related to "new platforms and infrastructure" and another for centralized services such as the ads system.

Facebook just underwent the biggest executive re-shuffle in its history, Recode reported May 8. A spokesperson for Facebook confirmed the moves to CNN.

Meanhwhile, Facebook has attempted to keep its promotion income becoming through more up to date, more youthful stages like WhatsApp and Instagram.

Facebook will now operate under several branches: a "family of programs" team (such as Facebook, Insta-gram, whats app and Messenger), a brand new platforms branch (which includes a block-chain technology group, augmented and digital truth, venture engineering and artificial intelligence) and a "fundamental product companies" group, that covers shared resources like adverts, data analytics and safety.

But the sweeping reorganization also comes at a sensitive moment for Facebook.

If adding a blockchain initiative to its arsenal is part of the solution for Facebook, it may encounter greater governmental scrutiny as a result. Jerome Pesenti is in charge of AI. Messenger's existing head, David Marcus, will head up a new blockchain unit - a move he says was his idea. Those three sections are being led by Mark Rabkin, Alex Schultz, and Naomi Gleit respectively.

"This is an important time for Facebook as we take a broader view of our responsibility", Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday.

The company also reportedly split up its product and engineering departments into three divisions. But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that he's investigating how to best use the technology.

Marcus sits on the top managerial staff of Coinbase, a trade for digital currency (which utilizes the blockchain as its hidden innovation), and joined Facebook from PayPal in 2014.
