Boy Scouts to drop 'boy' from name and conservatives are freaking out

Boy Scouts of the America has already started admitting girls into the Cub Scouts, and Scouts BSA will accept girls next year, according to the Associated Press.

Scouts BSA, the program for 11-to-17-year-olds, will stay divided along gender lines.

However, other factors indicate that the name change to symbolize recognition of wider participation does not translate across the entire program. "We are thrilled that the mission and goal of the BSA's programs to instill character and leadership is now a powerful promise for boys and girls alike". No chartered partner will be forced to adopt a program for girls.

"This is a curriculum for boys, and boys are different than girls", he said.

The new Scout Me In recruitment campaign and creative approach was created by award-winning Dallas agency Johnson & Sekin, who also led efforts in the naming process supporting Scouts BSA.

Among the initiatives is creation of numerous new badges that girls can earn, focusing on outdoor activities and on science, engineering, technology and math. The Boy Scouts of America will remain the umbrella organization, and is not changing its name.

The decision follows a unanimous decision taken in October permitting girls to join the Cub Scouts, for younger children, and eventually graduate as Eagle Scouts. There was so much interest in bringing girls into the ranks after the initial announcement, a Boy Scouts rep told Moneyish, that the organization rolled out an "early adopter" pilot program of 170 Cub Scout packs for girls ages 7 to 10. Reasons include competition from sports leagues, a perception by some families that they are old-fashioned and busy family schedules.

"For many decades, the Boy Scouts helped turn boys into men", he said in a statement, commending his son for becoming an Eagle Scout.

While some decry the loss of the masculine moniker, the Boy Scouts of America was looking at fast-dwindling coffers and declining membership-2.3 million, down from 2.6 million five years ago and 4 million at its peak. The overall organization will still be named the Boy Scouts of America.

She said relations with the Boy Scouts in her region used to be collaborative and now are "very chilly". "You can't ask little boys to be masculine". Waning numbers have sent both groups scrambling to entice people to join and remain active.

Neely says once a girl scout always a girl scout.

"The name is part of a rebranding effort to reflect the group's historic decision past year to accept girls". "We did rockets; we built them, and then we launched them".
