U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the location and date of his upcoming meeting with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s top leader Kim Jong Un probably will be announced in a "couple of days".

North Korea announced on Sunday that it would close its main nuclear test site next month but some U.S. officials are skeptical that Pyongyang will give up its nuclear arsenal.

A State Department official could not confirm the reports, but added: "We are working to see U.S. citizens who are detained in North Korea come home as soon as possible".

President Donald Trump's latest push coincides with tense negotiations with South Korea over how to share the cost of the USA military force.

The exact date and location has yet to be fixed for the meeting between Trump and Kim, who lobbed personal insults and lambasted each other past year over North Korea's nuclear arms ambitions.

But it's expected the two could have discussed last week's inter-Korean summit as well as China's role in North Korea's move towards denuclearization and the process of putting a formal end to the Korean War by drafting a permanent peace treaty.

President Trump's administration said that three USA prisoners held by North Korea may soon be released and that his policies have succeeded where previous administrations failed.
