Thunderstorms with gusty winds were expected Thursday across northern India, the Meteorological Department said in its forecast.

While it had been windy with occasional thunder, the weather suddenly turned violent at 2.30 am on Thursday when people were fast asleep.

Those injured have been admitted in government hospitals, the media reported, adding that efforts are being made to assess the loss of life and property due to the deadly storm that hit the areas on Wednesday evening.

'We can confirm at least 46 deaths, 41 injuries from around 40 of the state's 75 districts, ' T.P. Gupta of the Uttar Pradesh relief commissioner's office told AFP. He said that 156 cattleheads also perished in the calamity.

Most deaths were caused by house collapses and lightning. "It will take us at least two days to restore supply", said Alwar power distribution company executive engineer DP Singh.

The damage was particularly severe on Wednesday night in Agra, the northern Indian city where the white marble Taj Mahal is located. That was accompanied by 126 km/hr storm winds.

At least 22 people have died in Rajasthan after a high-intensity squall swept through eastern parts of state, news agency ANI said.

Villages in the Jaunpur area near Mussoorie were also reeling in the dark.
