Pilot of Southwest flight praised after engine explosion

The Southwest Airlines pilot who safely landed an airplane Tuesday after the engine exploded is being hailed a hero.

'Southwest 1380, we're single engine, ' the former United States Navy fighter pilot said.

"She came over and she told us, 'Everyone calm down, I'm going to land the plane, we're going to be safe, '" said Coleman, quoting Capt. Shults.

Shults: "Could you have the medical meet us there on the runway as well?" We sometimes forget-or maybe headline writers do-that the pilots are always the first to the scene of the accident so in addition to the duty of care they feel professionally for passengers, they have a certain self-interest.

"No, it's not on fire, but part of it's missing", Mrs Shults said.

After the mid-air blast tore a gaping hole in the aircraft's side she told shocked air traffic controllers "there's a hole and uh... someone went out".

While Shults was largely unaware of what exactly unfolded in the cabin of the aircraft she was piloting, she was not far off.

In the cockpit of the Boeing 737 en route from NY to Dallas, Shults calmly informed air traffic control about the problems and arranged for emergency crews to meet her plane at its new destination. The twin-engine Boeing 737 that left NY with 149 people board was hit by shrapnel that smashed a window and damaged the fuselage, killing a passenger and injuring seven others, authorities said.

Southwest Airlines, which was founded in 1971, is the biggest domestic airline by passenger numbers, carrying about one in four US fliers. "So she knew she had to work harder than everyone else". Shults has two children. "I think she just helped propel that", the Edmonton air traffic controller said in an interview.

"Some people grow up around aviation".

"She comforted everyone", she said.

Mother-in-law Virginia Shults told The Washington Post she wasn't shocked when she heard the pilot's cool demeanor.

The Air Force "wasn't interested" in having her, however, so she turned to the Navy.

Passengers aboard Flight 1380 have credited Pilot Tammie Jo Shults with saving their lives. Shults' brother in-law, said in the LA Times. She taught her students how to fly the Navy T-2 trainer.

The fight, for example, to get women into combat roles in our military, a debate that ultimately led to complete access for women in 2013, wasn't because there is a girl's way to fight, but because, if trained, women can perform in the same way as men.

Tammie Jo spent a decade in the military. She rose to the rank of lieutenant commander before leaving the Navy Reserve in 2001. She later joined Southwest Airlines. They had no idea he was on the flight until he called them safely from the ground. She applied CPR for 20 minutes, but Riordan could not be saved.

"It was just as if she and I were sitting here talking", Virginia Shults said in the Post article.

"She's a formidable woman, as sharp as a tack", he told the Associated Press. "She's a very caring, giving person who takes care of lots of people". That being said, the Southwest pilots were faced with multiple emergencies. Get the scoop below.

Captain Tammie Jo Shults was in control of the Boeing 737 when one of the plane's engines blew mid-flight. A woman sitting next to the window, Jennifer Riordan, was almost sucked out when it was shattered. Although she wasn't sucked out of the plane, she did suffer fatal head injuries as a result of the incident.
