Michael Cohen drops defamation suits

President Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen has dropped libel lawsuits against Fusion GPS and BuzzFeed News, the organizations responsible for creating the Trump dossier and publishing it, respectively, CBS News' Jeff Pegues confirmed.

Cohen's attorney, David Schwartz, said Thursday the decision to abandon the suits was hard. "But given the events that have unfolded, and the time, attention and resources needed to prosecute these matters, we have dismissed the matters, despite their merits".

Cohen sued after BuzzFeed published the dossier compiled for Fusion by Christopher Steele, a former British spy, which alleged Cohen met Russian operatives in the Czech Republic in August 2016 as part of an effort by the Kremlin to assist Trump's campaign. The FBI is reportedly looking into payments Cohen helped facilitate to two women who claimed to have had affairs with Trump.

Fusion GPS said in a statement that it welcomed Cohen's decision.

"The lawsuits against BuzzFeed over the Steele dossier have never been about the merits of our decision to publish it", Buzzfeed spokesman Matt Mittenthal said in a statement.

On a recent press gaggle aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters that he doesn't know where Cohen got the money or why he was moved to pay-off Daniels. He provided a copy of his passport to BuzzFeed to show he did not enter the country, but McClatchy reported he could have entered the country when he was traveling to Europe and entered through a country that did not require a passport.

Lawyers for President Trump's personal attorney seek to block prosecutors' access to his files; Laura Ingle reports from New York City.

The Russian tech executive Aleksej Gubarev filed a lawsuit against the media company past year for including his name in the dossier (BuzzFeed has since apologized and redacted it).

The report has not been corroborated by any other news outlets, and the reporters responsible for the story have published several articles about the Russian Federation investigation that have either fizzled out or not been corroborated.

"Bad reporting, bad information and bad story", he wrote on Twitter along with a denial of ever visiting Prague.
